New Wax
I'm sure you've noticed my unabashed love for all things Andy Hull here on the blog. While I've been a devoted fan of his work with Manchester Orchestra, I'm actually partial to the stripped-down folksy nature of his solo project Right Away, Great Captain! The second installment of his ambitious trilogy album series is entitled The Eventually Home and it was officially released yesterday. Conceptually, the album continues the story of a 1600's-era sailor who witnesses a personal betrayal before leaving for a 3 year sabbatical on the open seas. The ensuing whirlwind of emotions stemming from that betrayal amidst the isolation of sea-life form the backbone of Hull's songs under the Right Away, Great Captain! moniker. Fret not, you needn't be educated on the back-story in order to appreciate the songs, but a grasp on the basic concept surely enriches the material. The surprisingly young Hull is really hitting his stride as a songwriter and the arrangements on The Eventually Home are noticeably more adorned than on The Bitter End, the first installment of the trilogy. The album contains shinier production with more instrumentation and background vocals, but the confessional feeling of the first album is never discarded. I realize that I probably sound like a gushing fan-girl, but The Eventually Home only cements Hull on my list of favorite contemporary songwriters.
