You Should Know
Portland, OR trio Mimicking Birds, who just released their self-titled debut album on Glacial Pace Recordings, did their recording in the home studio of Glacial Pace owner and Modest Mouse frontman Isaac Brock. If that's not enough to pique your interest, the band's hushed yet intricate sound should do the trick. A songwriting vehicle for lead singer Nate Lacy, Mimicking Birds transformed from a bedroom-recorded solo project to a full band effort when childhood friends Tim Skellinger and Aaron Hanson joined the cause. Lacy's warm vocals lend an honesty to the material and while the songs are acoustic-based, atmospheric flourishes skew the material just enough to make it a chore to categorize. Particular moments on Mimicking Birds are reminiscent of Ugly Cassanova, so the Brock connection makes sense. Definitely a band worth checking out. -- Capt. Obvious
