Peter Wolf Crier: Garden Of Arms (2011)
I mentioned Minneapolis-based duo Peter Wolf Crier after they released their infectious debut album entitled Inter-Be last year on Jagjaguwar Records. The duo is back with a follow-up called Garden Of Arms, which is set for release on September 6th. Where their debut album boasted a likable blend of lo-fi and folk-rock sensibilities, Garden Of Arms strays from the folk mold while proving to be the brawnier, more compelling version of the band’s earlier sound. “Right Away” instantly marks Garden Of Arms as a sonic departure. The production is more involved yet not to the point of being overdone. Energetic percussion weaves seamlessly with a richer, more involved soundscape. Speaking of percussion, drummer Brian Moen is at the top of his game on Garden Of Arms. He provides a fitting backdrop for singer/guitarist Peter Pisano’s rangy vocals. Elsewhere, the guitar layering at the end of “Beach” hypnotizes, “Never Meant To Love You” provides slow-jam goodness, while ethereal album closer “Wheel” rides a steady groove then gently floats into oblivion. While too much elaboration can sometimes toe the line of tedium, Garden Of Arms works because it achieves marked complexity while retaining the band’s strongpoints. Highly recommended. – Capt.
